Don’t Drink and Drive!

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a good time to remind ourselves of the perils of drinking and driving.

Drinking and driving is not only against the law – it’s dangerous for you and for others on the road. But if you’re ever in a vehicle that gets pulled over for a suspected DUI – whether or not you’re the one behind the wheel – here are 5 things to keep in mind.

1. Pull over quickly and safely

  • Stay in your car. Do not get out unless asked to do so.
  • Shut your car off.
  • If you’re wearing a hoodie or hat, take it off.
  • Put your hands on the wheel.

2. Be Polite to Law Enforcement

  • Being disrespectful to law enforcement is never a good idea.
  • Follow any instructions given.

3. You can plead the 5th.

  • You have the right to remain silent. Which means you don’t have to say anything that would incriminate yourself.

4. Comply with questions, but don’t give out extra information

  • There’s no need to tell law enforcement where you were, who you were with, and how many drinks you consumed.

5. Try to stay calm

  • It’s scary getting arrested, especially when you’re intoxicated.
  • Respectfully ask for legal representation.
  • Remember, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
